भज गोविन्दं भज गोविन्दं भज गोविन्दं मूढमते।
नामस्मरणादन्यमुपायं नहि पश्यामो भवतरणे॥
bhaja govindaṃ bhaja govindaṃ bhaja govindaṃ mūḍhamate
nāma smaraṇād anyam upāyaṃ nahi paśyāmo bhavataraṇe

Summary: The Supremacy of the Divine Name
Oh foolish mind, constantly worship and remember bhagavān to overcome the endless cycle of saṃsāra.
In this current age of kaliyuga, continuous chanting of the divine name is the most effective means to attain true purity of mind.
The wise clearly declare that they see absolutely no other path to successfully cross over this vast ocean of worldly existence.
The Excuse of Lacking a Guide
- The common justification for delay: Many individuals express a desire to follow a spiritual path and practice sādhana, but they conveniently excuse themselves by claiming they cannot find a proper spiritual guide.
- The reality of seeking: While human beings are experts at fabricating excuses to avoid commitment, the truth is that if a seeker harbors a sincere and genuine wish, spiritual guides are always available to them.
The Interim Practice of Chanting
- A powerful starting point: For those who still maintain that they do not have a guide, the ācārya provides a foolproof interim solution: simply continue chanting the names of bhagavan.
- The ultimate means: The instruction he mūḍhamate, govindaṃ bhaja, govinda nāma smaraṇaṃ kuru directs the seeker to repeat the divine name relentlessly. The verse declares nāma smaraṇāt anyam upāyam nahi paśyāmaḥ, emphasizing that until proper guidance is found, there is no greater or more accessible means (upāyam or sādhana) than nāma smaraṇam.
The True Role of nāma smaraṇam
- Not a direct path to liberation: It is crucial to understand that constantly chanting the divine name will not directly grant a person spiritual liberation.
- Producing ideal conditions: Instead, nāma smaraṇam produces the ideal conditions and preparations required for advanced spiritual growth. By sincerely chanting the name, the seeker ensures that either in this janma or the next janma, they will be blessed with conducive health and the arrival of a proper guide.
- Stepping stone to higher wisdom: This foundational practice firmly places the individual on the spiritual path, eventually enabling them to undertake higher disciplines like karma yoga, upāsanā, jñāna yoga, śravaṇam, mananam, and nididhyāsanam.
Crossing the Ocean of saṃsāra
- The ultimate destination: By bringing a person to the systematic spiritual path, nāma smaraṇam ultimately assists them in attaining liberation and crossing the turbulent ocean of emotional dependence (bhavataraṇe). Therefore, uttering the names of bhagavan serves as the essential, minimum starting point for overcoming saṃsāra.
The Greatness of the Name govinda
- Choosing a divine name: While repeating any name of bhagavan is perfectly effective, this specific text highlights bhaja govindaṃ.
- The beautiful resonance: Among all the divine names, govinda is considered an exceptionally beautiful and sacred name. This is why traditional religious gatherings routinely conclude with the collective chant, “govinda nāma smaraṇam govinda govinda“. A seeker is free to take up this nāma or any other that appeals to their heart.
The Conclusion of the Teaching
- Winding up the profound text: With this final verse, the complete and profound teachings of ādi śaṅkarācārya and his inspired disciples are beautifully wrapped up. The entire corpus, known as the dvādaśa mañjarikā stotram (the initial twelve verses) and the carpaṭa pañjarikā stotram (the subsequent verses by the disciples), comes to a glorious conclusion.
